What could be better than enjoying your own pool? Owning a pool brings great joy, but it also requires regular cleaning. After all, no one wants to swim in a dirty pool or cloudy water. Here, you’ll learn more about modern pool water care. If you have any further questions, our team is always ready to assist you.

What You Need to Know About Pool Maintenance
Physical and Chemical Water Treatment
Unlike chemical water treatment, where substances are added to make the water usable, physical water treatment removes harmful components from the water through various processes.
Physical Water Treatment
Water Circulation and Filtration
Filtration is the heart of the pool and accounts for 80% of water maintenance. The entire pool volume should be completely circulated multiple times a day. As a rule of thumb, the minimum daily filtration time is calculated as follows: water temperature divided by two. If the water temperature exceeds 30°C, we strongly recommend continuous filtration.
Why Is Pool Maintenance So Important?

- An incorrect pH level causes skin irritation and reduces the effectiveness of disinfectants.
- Without disinfection, bacteria multiply, which can be harmful to both health and pool equipment.
- Algae can cause green discoloration of the water and damage the pool surface.
- Calcium deposits make pool walls rough and hinder filtration.

Adding Pool Care Products
To properly dose pool care products, you need to know your pool’s water capacity. Below are calculation formulas for the most common pool types:
The Right Care at the Right Time
The Sequence of Maintenance Steps
Why?
- pH Adjustment
- The pH level forms the basis for all subsequent maintenance steps.
- Optimizes and enhances the effectiveness of other care products.
- Disinfection
- Ensures hygienically perfect water.
- Eliminates potential pathogens.
- Algae Prevention
- Algae provide ideal breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi.
- Slippery algae deposits can cause accidents.
- Flocculation and Clarification
- Extremely fine particles cannot be filtered out.
- Flocculants bind these particles into larger clumps that remain in the filter.
When?
- pH Adjustment
- If the pH level is outside the correct range, it should be adjusted immediately.
- Disinfection
- Maintain disinfection throughout the entire pool season.
- Perform additional chlorine shock treatments in case of issues (e.g., algae, cloudy water, slippery surfaces).
- Algae Prevention
- Prevent algae growth, especially when exposed to sunlight.
- Flocculation and Clarification
- Maintain throughout the entire pool season.
Optimal Pool Maintenance Throughout the Year
Spring Cleaning
Spring cleaning should be done once a year, ideally in the spring. Walls, floors, and filter sand should be free from dirt, lime deposits, algae residues, and microorganisms. Only then can care products be fully effective. Don’t forget to clean the filter.
Refilling
After thorough cleaning, refill the pool:
- When refilling, add a liquid agent for moderately hard water immediately. This prevents a pH increase. The calcium contained in the water can settle on pool walls and floors.
- Effects of calcium deposits: Rough pool walls and calcified filter sand.
- Note: The pH level may rise quickly in the first few days after refilling. Check it weekly and adjust as needed.
- Perform a basic disinfection or a chlorine shock treatment.
Vacation Maintenance
If you don’t have an automatic dosing system, ensure proper disinfection and algae prevention while away. Ideally, cover the pool with a tarp and keep the automatic circulation running daily.
Winterizing Your Pool
- Maintain a pH level of 7.0 to 7.4.
- Perform a chlorine shock treatment.
- Lower the water level.
- Distribute the appropriate dose of winterizing chemicals in the pool.
- Drain the external pipes.
- Place ice buffers, such as wooden blocks or Styrofoam, in the water to absorb ice pressure.
- Cover the pool with a protective tarp.
By following these simple steps, you can enjoy crystal-clear water all year round. If you need further assistance, Yousky® is here to help!
