The sun is shining, temperatures are rising, and pool season is in full swing. But suddenly, your pool water turns green. That’s an instant end to the fun.
Pool Maintenance & Water Quality Green water can usually be treated quickly with proper pool care. Here, we explain the most common causes of algae growth and how to get your pool back to crystal-clear condition so you can enjoy summer to the fullest.

What Causes Algae in a Pool?
Algae growth is strongly influenced by intense sunlight and temperatures above 27°C (80°F). Weather fluctuations can also affect your pool water quality. The following pool-specific factors can contribute to rapid algae growth:
- The pH level is too high or too low, preventing chlorine from working effectively.
- Chlorine concentration is insufficient.
- Filtration time is too short, meaning the pool water isn’t fully circulated.
- Filter media is dirty, reducing the efficiency of the filtration system.
- Insufficient manual cleaning, leaving organic debris in the pool.
- A pool cover left on too long in hot weather, creating ideal conditions for algae.
How to Get Rid of Algae in Your Pool
The easiest way to eliminate algae is by following these steps in order:
- Measure the pH level. If it falls outside the recommended range of 7.0–7.4, adjust it using Yousky® pH Increaser or Yousky® pH Reducer. Check the pH at least once a week, as chlorine is most effective within this range.
- Check chlorine levels. If needed, perform a shock treatment using fast-dissolving Yousky® Chlorine Granules.
- Remove dirt and algae from the pool surface with a fine-mesh skimmer and scrub algae from pool walls using a pool brush. Vacuum the dead algae from the bottom using a Yousky® pool vacuum.
- Run the filtration system continuously for 24–48 hours. This helps trap fine debris in the filter. Backwash the system regularly to remove accumulated dirt and ensure optimal filtration. Avoid using the pool until chlorine levels return to safe levels.
- Add an algaecide such as Yousky® Algaecide to prevent future growth. Additionally, use Yousky® Flocculant to remove remaining particles. If using a sand filter system, regularly adding a flocculant will help eliminate phosphates from the water.
- Resume normal pool maintenance once the water is clear.
